I'm a former journalist who left the field in 2006 to study nursing. In July I took the California state boards and became an RN. Currently, I'm volunteering in two hospital emergency departments, while looking for a full-time RN position and writing about life as a nurse in training. Prior to making this career change, I wrote freelance, covering emergency systems, identity theft, and the technology business. In 2005 I published a book with three other writers on counter-terrorism technologies. As an editor, I worked most recently for Mother Jones, having spent many years at Wired magazine, where I developed, commissioned, and edited long-form stories. At Wired, I also worked as second-in-command to the editor-in-chief, managing the editorial staff and helping guide the publication which was nominated for three National Magazine Awards during my tenure; as founding executive editor of Wired News, the magazine's daily news Web site; and as research editor. |

As an author, I've written features for The New York Times, Salon, GQ, and Inc., among others; and I published a novel, As Francesca, in 1997. Through the 1980s and early 1990s, I worked on staff at several San Francisco and Bay Area newspapers and taught English to both high school and college students. | |||||||||||
